English Language

The English language began in England. Germanic tribes (Saxons, Angles, and Jutes) came to Britain from around 449 AD. They made their home in the south and east of the island, pushing out the Celtic Britons who were there before them, or making them speak the English language instead of the old languages. The English language is the primary language of several countries (including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and many of its former colonies, and the United States) and a second language in a number of multilingual countries (including India, Singapore, and the Philippines).
